SWOO Drain, Wollstonecraft. (DEMOLISHED AND REPLACED!!!) Where: Off at Wollstonecraft station, Walk down public walkway between Number 15 and 17 Belmont Ave. Log: 20th December 1994 1st time Howie, Mustang and Jace. Photos: None. Interest: 6/10 Warnings: Don't go if its raining or looks like rain. In the tunnel I began to get an irritation of the nose and eyes. Don't use a lighter, I believe that some form of gas is leaking into the tunnel. Equipment: At least one torch each with good batteries. Rubber soled shoes are a must. Have something to drink back at the car as it gets hot and humid underground. Description:After walking down the stairs between #15 and 17 Belmont Ave, you see a creek on your right. Either jump in from here and head away down the creek or follow the private track beside the creek and enter from the side (bit less wetter). You will notice a 5ft brick arch. Go into this and follow it. It opens out shortly to an open drain. Follow this till you come to a really steep section of the drain. SURF IT! to the bottom. That's a fun experience in itself. Now you will come to a 5ft enclosed brick arch drain with some bars across. You can easily slip past the bars. Now SURFING time again. All the way to the bottom. Once at the bottom the drain goes straight and to the right. Going straight will see you exit somewhere in Ivy St. Have a look left. There is a 30-40ft shaft going straight up. No ladder though. Now go down the right hand drain. Its about an 8ft high brick arch drain and about 7 ft wide. Follow this for a hundred metres or so. The drain shortens to a cement rectangular at about 5ft for about 10 meters. Then it evolves into a 7ft high, 7ft wide rectangular drain. Notice the stalactites growing form the roof as well as the crystalline looking water beads seeping through the ceiling. Along the tunnel you will find one more side tunnel on your right. Dunno where it goes. Also before you emerge from the tunnel you come across a 4ft round metal tunnel on your left. Follow it, see where it goes??? It leads towards the old abandoned gasworks??? Now the tunnel exits to Wollstonecraft bay. Climb out and you are now at the south west corner of the abandoned gasworks. This drain tour should be done along with the exploration of the Gasworks.
